Illini Bird Fanciers Club Library

We maintain a library of bird keeping and aviculture related books, videos and digital media for the reference and education of our club members. Compiling and expanding our club library is an ongoing project.

All books, videos and digital media in our club library may be borrowed during regular club meetings for a period of one month by IBF members in good standing. All materials borrowed from the library must be checked-out with the club librarian, and checked-in with the librarian upon return. Please return all borrowed library materials at the beginning of the following meeting so other club members have an opportunity to use them. Members are welcome to re-borrow previously checked-out library materials at the end of the meeting.

If you have any topical references that you'd like to donate to our club library please Contact Us. We especially thank these benefactors for their generous personal contributions to our club library: Hope Edmiston, Pat Halleman, Bob Keller, Karen Williams, Carie Nixon, Steve Miller, Chris Ryan, Teresa Thomas, Mary Warren

The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw

One Woman's Fight to Save the World's Most Beautiful Bird
by Bruce Barcott
ISBN 10: 1400062934 / ISBN 13: 9781400062935
Donated by Steve and Sylvie Miller
In The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw, award winning author Bruce Barcott chronicles Sharon Matola's inspiring crusade to stop a multinational corporation in its tracks. Ferocious in her passion, she and her confederates - a ragtag army of courageous locals and eccentric expatriates - endure slander and reprisals and take the fight to the courtroom and the boardroom, from local village streets to protests around the world.

As the dramatic story unfolds, Barcott addresses the realities of economic survival in Third World countries, explores the tension between environmental conservation and human development, and puts a human face on the battle over globalization. In this marvelous and spirited book, Barcott shows us how one unwavering woman risked her life to save the most beautiful bird in the world.

Avian First Aid Avian First Aid DVD Video Format
Be Your Bird's First Responder
by Dr. Greg Burkett

Pet bird owners commonly experience emergencies with their birds. Some cases need to be seen by an avian veterinarian immediately, however, in many emergencies first aid can be given by the owner to stabilize the bird until veterinary care can be administered. Avian First Aid is a comprehensive presentation designed to teach owners how to properly handle a pet bird emergency. It is written and presented by Dr. Greg Burkett a Board Certified Avian Veterinarian with 17 years experience in avian medicine.

The presentation discusses how to recognize and prepare for an emergency, how to capture and restrain a bird, and gives a complete list of items needed to assemble an avian first aid kit. Dr. Burkett also describes how to set up a home hospital cage, and discusses in detail the common emergencies and describes the first aid needed in each situation. Emergencies discussed include Animal attacks, Bleeding, Burns, Egg binding, and many others. Every bird owner needs to be aware of these potential emergencies and be familiar with how to stabilize their bird, and this DVD can help prepare bird owners for these situations.

Fantastic Performing Parrots Fantastic Performing Parrots DVD Video Format
by Tani Robar
Donated by Chris Ryan

Featuring five parrots, this DVD presents a lively and entertaining display of bird tricks, many of which are original and performed on DVD for the first time. Adding to the entertainment are the distinct personalities of each parrot. Poopsie, a Green-Cheeked Conure, is the oldest of the five and does the most complicated tricks. Squawk, a Blue-Crowned Conure, actually holds a conversation with Tani and does some incredible tricks. Kiri is a Congo African Grey, and the youngest of the group. Prince is a seldom seen Crimson-Winged Parakeet. And there's finally Cassie, a Black-Headed Caique, the clown of the group and Pet Star Winner on Animal Planet TV. Her performance is truly unique.

Most people know that many birds can utter a few syllables that sound like human speech; but how many of you know that birds can actually carry on a conversation? It's true! This DVD will show you the types of questions to ask and how to create the impression that your bird is actually talking to you!

Now, through the magic of DVD video, you can study Tani Robar's training techniques over and over and capture the contagious warmth, enthusiasm, and humor that have made her a great trainer.

A Murder of Crows A Murder of Crows DVD Video Format
PBS Nature Series - Narrated by Nora Young
Donated by Karen Williams and Bob Keller

Crows do not have the best reputations. They are generally dismissed as spooky - Hitchcock used them quite successfully to frighten moviegoers - or as a general nuisance. But their image is about to take a real turn. New research has show they are among the most intelligent animals in the world, able to use tools as only elephants and chimpanzees do, able to recognize each other's voices and over 250 distinct calls.

They are very social, mate for life, and raise their young for up to 5 years. And they are able to recognize individual humans and pick them out of a crowd up to two years later. Crow experts from around the world sing their praises, and present us with captivating new footage of crows as we have never seen them before.

Parrot Confidential Parrot Confidential DVD Video Format
PBS Nature Series
Donated by Karen Williams and Bob Keller

Exotic beauty, outrageous intelligence and remarkably advanced language skills have made parrots one of the world's most popular pets. But unlike dogs and cats, parrots have not been domesticated. Their hard-wired ear-shattering squawks and unpredictable behavior are designed for the rain forest, not for captivity. An intense need to bond, complex emotional lives, and the ability to reach ages up to 80 or 90 years complicate the equation further. Sooner or later, some owners come to the conclusion that they have taken on a more difficult challenge than they can handle, and they turn to already overcrowded shelters and sanctuaries for help.

From the suburbs of our own country to the wilds of Costa Rica, parrot owners, rescuers, breeders and biologists involved in conservation programs share their stories and the stories of their parrots in this bittersweet and unforgettable film about the difficulties and consequences of keeping and caring for parrots as pets.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole DVD Video Format
Warner Bros. Pictures
Donated by Carie Nixon

Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder makes his animation debut with the fantasy family adventure "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" based on the beloved Guardians of Ga'Hoole books by Kathryn Lasky. The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father's epic stories of the Guardians of Ga' Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.

While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father's favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd's jealousy has terrible consequences--causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians--Soren's only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill DVD Video Format

An engrossing, delightful film, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is the bonafide sleeper theatrical hit of the year. The film's endearing guide is Mark Bittner, an aging bohemian, but the supporting cast members, a rambunctious flock of urban parrots, are the true stars, and their surprisingly humanlike behavior makes for a wondrous and rare experience. The film follows the ups-and-downs of these wild birds within the green niches of San Francisco as Bittner befriends, feeds, and names the members of the flock.

Along the way, we meet many unforgettable characters: among them Connor, the grouchy yet lovable outcast of the flock, crying for a mate but luckless in his pursuits, and "the lovers," Picasso and Sophie, inseparable until Sophie is forced into mourning when Picasso disappears. More than a mere birdwatcher, Bittner finds solace in his immersion with these strikingly beautiful creatures - but how will he cope when he's evicted from his sanctuary and forced to live away from the parrots? Packed with romance, comedy and a surprise ending that makes you feel like you could fly out of the theater, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill shows just how wondrously similar the human and animal worlds really can be.
