Because predatory animals are attuned to signs of illness or weakness in their prey, birds are instinctively geared to conceal signs of illness. By the time you become aware of sickness in your bird, chances are the illness is already in an advanced stage and your bird is need of immediate medical attention by a qualified veterinarian.
Unfortunately, we know of no avian veterinarians practicing in the Springfield, IL area, apart from periodic visits by Dr. Scott McDonald as part of his mobile Avian Laparoscopy practice. If you live near Springfield, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, IL (100 miles away) is the closest emergency facility. Bird Medicine and Surgery in Chesterfield, MO (120 miles away) is an alternative option for emergency care. Nearly all other avian vets in Illinois are concentrated in the Chicago area (200 miles away).
By the time you are able to transport your bird to an avian vet in the event of a serious illness or injury, it may be too late. Proper diet, a safe environment, and preventive well-bird check-ups by an avian vet at least once per year are essential to the well being of birds in your charge.
Listed here are avian veterinarians known to us who serve the central Illinois region. One of these vets, Scott McDonald, has a mobile practice. Consult Dr. McDonald's web site and mobile clinic calendar for his itinerary.
